We don’t know exactly when Shakespeare started writing plays, but they were probably being performed in London by , and he’s likely to have written his final plays just a couple of years before his death in It is believed that he wrote around 38 plays, including collaborations with other writers. The study of parody in Elizabethan literature has contributed to the dating of plays and has aided speculation about feuds among literary men and move- ments.

His birth is traditionally celebrated on April 23, the date of his death.
